ESL and EFL information
ESL
is an acronym for 'English as a Second Language', while EFL stands for
'English as a Foreign Language'. EFL indicates the use of English in a
non-English-speaking region.
ESL is the use of English is generally by refugees, immigrants and their
children within the Anglosphere. Typically, this sort of English is learned
to function in the new host country. Typically, EFL is learned either to
pass exams as a necessary part of one's education, or for career progression
while working for an organisation or business with an international focus.
ESL and EFL programs also differ in the variety of
English which is taught. English can refer to various
dialects, due to the different places it is spoken. Generally the dialects
are not too different, with the main differences being in pronunciation,
slang, and certain vocabulary. These varieties of English can include British, American,
Australian and others. Obviously, those studying English in order to fit
into their new country will learn the variety spoken there. However, for
those who do not intend to change countries, the question arises of which
sort of English to learn.
Benefits of online ESL and EFL courses
Students can study a course at anytime, from anywhere, no matter what
their work or family schedule be. It also enables students to learn in their
preferred learning style. Course material is available all the time,
including lectures or readings. Attendance is measured by participation,
which increases interaction and effectiveness of learning. Using technology
to complete the course means you learn computer skills essential for today's
business environment. Many online courses are offered by recognised
universities, so you graduate with an accredited qualification. Online
courses can also mean lower costs, as travel costs are not involved and
students have the time to work as well. The courses themselves are often
cheaper without the overhead costs of buildings and associated campus costs.

Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab - For ESL/EFL Students
http://www.esl-lab.com/ This ESL listening Web site created by Randall Davis helps ESL/EFL students improve their listening comprehension skills through practice with self-grading quiz pages.
Basically, I wanted to create something on the Web that would help enhance language learning beyond the static page (i.e., just the printed word) and would focus on listening skills----a relatively underdeveloped area on the Internet at that time. My EFL students were constantly asking me for ways on improving their listening skills outside of the classroom, and it dawned on me that online materials for autonomous learners would be real boon to students worldwide. I want to point out that the main objective of the site isn't to test students listening skills; rather, by doing the variety of pre-listening, listening, and post-listening activities, students can discover ways to learn how to develop their listening skills. Listening and speaking skills must be developed together, and working together with other students in groups and discussing the content of the listening activities help learners improve their overall communication skills by focusing on specific tasks.
