Why an Advanced Certificate in TESOL? In the case of a 120/140-hour (4/5 week) recognised intensive certificate course, e.g. Cambridge/RSA, Trinity College or UK Universities there are requirements, not only to cover the theory and methodology of English language teaching, but also the practical components including 6 hours observed and assessed teaching practice. Such a course, however good, can do little more in 120/140 hours, than skim the surface. As a result there is a growing pool of teachers whose classroom management and teaching techniques are reasonably effective but who lack in depth knowledge.

The quality of Cambridge's ELT list is achieved by extremely close collaboration between in-house editors, all of whom have teaching experience and qualifications, and the teaching profession. Extensive market research precedes the development of new materials which are then piloted in schools in many parts of the world. PREPARING FOR EXAMINATIONS

Cambridge
Special help given with Use of English papers, especially the summary in the CPE paper, and the alternative usages in the CAE and CPE. Preparation for composition paper in CPE and formal and informal letter-writing for the FCE and CAE papers. Special preparation for the new FCE examination. Examinations early June and mid-December (FCE also in March); registration, mid-March and mid-October.

TOEFL
Special attention to Section 1, Listening Comprehension and Section 3, Reading Comprehension. The test takes place about every three months, and has to be booked about five to six weeks in advance.

TOEIC
Improvement of listening and reading and comprehension, with business-related content. Frequent tests, available weekly.

IELTS
Specific help with all modules: reading comprehension, writing tasks, and listening. Tests at monthly intervals, although between one test and the next, a student has to wait three months: this regulation applies also to the TOEFL.

The first Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) exam was introduced in December 1991. Now about 60,000 people from 127 countries take the exam every year. The majority of candidates are under 25 years old, and from Europe or South America. Exams are usually in June and December. You usually get your results about two months after the exam, and your certificate about six weeks after that. (These times are not fixed, and can change with circumstances.) In 2003 institutions such as the European Business School, London and the Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine (University of London) accepted students who had passed the CAE.

The examinations are based on realistic tasks, and show that you can use English in real-life situations. For example you should be able to take part in discussions with groups of native speakers, and be able to say clearly what you feel and what your ideas are. You should be able to write appropriate English in informal and business situations, and understand at least enough to know what is going on when watching TV or film documentaries.

Candidates should be relaxed and fluent in English. They should know something about how English life and culture affects the language (e.g. use of irony, understatement and register) and they should be able to express themselves in good English even in unexpected or complicated situations.
